Symptoms Of Acid Reflux Can Be Deceiving
A considerable number of people suffer from the symptoms of acid
reflux. It is best described as gastric acids from the stomach
which rise up into the a person's esophagus. This produces a
burning sensation in the chest area and many people refer to this
as heartburn.
Alot of people just live with it BUT if it is not treated, acid
reflux can cause damage to the esophagus which may lead to
esophageal cancer. This acid, as it moves up into the esophagus,
produces the burning sensation a person experiences and is also
causing irritation to the lining of the esophagus. People who
struggle with this end up having chronic acid reflux and will
continue to keep this condition / irritation because they never
give it a chance to heal. This continual irritation can lead to
permanent damage.
Every now and then, everybody will get some feeling of heartburn
but this does not mean they have acid reflux. This simple heartburn
is pretty easy to address with Tums or Rolaids and might be
associated with eating a large meal or a meal which is high in
spices and possibly eating too fast. The real problem is if the
heartburn begins to occur on a frequent basis, such as two or more
times a week. If that is the case then there is the
probability that acid reflux is developing.
Exactly What Is Acid Reflux Disease
Acid reflux disease, in the medical world, is officially known
by GERD, "Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease". This potential chronic
condition starts when the stomach acids back up into the esophagus
track. Untreated, this typically leads to esophageal damage which
may some type of surgery. It must be noted that when treatment for
acid reflux disease begins it is usually to stay as a necessary
treatment for the rest of your life. Now, there are medications
which claim to heal the damage but once you discontinue the
medication, the damage could return.
It is believed there are certain conditions which contribute to
acid reflux disease. Alot of people with scleraderma have reported
suffering with acid reflux disease due to the esophageal muscles
being damaged. Side note: Scleraderma is a rare disease that causes
hardening of the muscles, tissue, and major organs.
A Hiatal Hernia is yet another condition that people may have
that also causes them to suffer from acid reflux disease. The
hiatal hernia usually occurs when part of the upper stomach
attaches itself to the esophagus. This extended growth to the
esophagus will push against the diaphragm. When this happens the
esophagus is not correctly aligned in it's correct position and
this will make a person more susceptible to acid reflux
disease.
Also, Esophageal contractions are yet one more cause of acid
reflux disease. When the esophagus actually constricts this action
pushes acids upwards. And of course this results in the burning
sensation which we all know as heartburn.
